Meditation and Yoga

Files under Yoga | No Comments »

Meditation takes many forms with some of them being more complex than others. Simple techniques of meditation can be used by most people in their everyday life and helps to combat everyday problems.

If you apply meditative principles to the tasks and challenges of your everyday working life, you will soon observe significant changes being made around you.

However meditation is not just a question of sitting down and “having a think”. To meditate correctly, both the body and the mind should be perfectly relaxed and in tune with each other. Once they are in tune, then the meditative process can begin.

A time to meditate
You should set aside two periods of 10-20 minutes a day for meditation every day if possible, one in the morning and another period in the evening. Try and choose a time when you are not tired, otherwise you will find yourself becoming sleepy. So avoiding just after mealtimes and bedtime is a good idea.

If you can get into a routine of the same time and place, so much the better as this makes your meditation much easier and more rewarding.

Find a nice quiet comfortable spot where you are sure you will not be disturbed. If you need to, take the phone off the hook and switch your cell phone and the television off. Ensure you have picked a time when no-one is liable to knock on the door and disturb your concentration.

You can sit on the floor on a cushion, or on a straight backed chair (it’s up to you), however you should avoid overstuffed arm chairs as they may induce you to become sleepy.

Your posture should assist you in staying awake and alert, so you may need to experiment to find your optimum comfort zone for meditation without feeling any strain. You’re less likely to feel sleepy if your back and head are erect.

Many people who practice yoga like to use the lotus position. This makes an ideal steady base.

Lotus Position
Start by sitting on the floor with your legs spread out in front of you, then bend one knee and bring the foot up onto the other thigh. Bring the second leg in, either under the opposite thigh (half lotus position), or over it (full lotus). Beginners to the lotus position may prefer an ordinary crossed legged or seated pose.

Plastic Surgery After Weight Loss Surgery

Those who have had weight loss surgery will find a significant difference in their energy levels as well as how they look. However, there are often times where the drastic change in weight leaves behind extra skin that was used to support the extra weight. If this is the case, then having plastic surgery can help you in going back to a normal body shape after the weight has been lost.

Weight loss surgery can allow you to loose an average of two pounds every week. This change can move you from belonging to the category of morbid obesity to being on target weight and being healthy. However the extra weight will often times stretch the skin on your body. Because of this, you may have found that you have lost the weight, but not the extra skin that was used for your body. The problem with this extra skin is that it won’t disappear with diet and exercise. This can then cause problems with looks, finding the right type of clothing and hygiene problems.

There are several types of plastic surgery procedures that you can consider having. The first is known as abdominoplasty, or a tummy tuck. This will not only remove the extra skin from this area, but will also tighten muscles that are near your abdomen. This is done by an incision being made in the abdomen. The extra skin will be removed from the incision, and then stitched back together. This is one of the more popular surgeries as most of the skin is found to stay around this area.

If the extra skin is in other areas, you can also use plastic surgery. Arms and thighs are common places to have extra skin that may need to be removed. You can also consider a face lift to remove the extra skin. Often times, not having this surgery will cause you to look older than you really are. Plastic surgery for your face can be divided to having an eye, brow or complete face lift. There are also options for having a complete lower body lift if you have several places with excess skin.

If you are considering plastic surgery to remove excess skin from your weight loss surgery and new figure, it is best to give your body some time to not only loose the weight but be ready for the surgery. The surgeries will cause your body to be stressed from the incisions and performance. Because of this, it is best to give some time before deciding to perform the surgery.

Plastic surgery is one possible step that may be implemented after you have received weight loss surgery. If you have found that you have lost a large amount of weight but the rest of your body isn’t making the right changes, then plastic surgery can help. Before looking into this, make sure that you are healthy and at your target weight. From here, you can decide the areas to get the excess skin removed; giving you a cleaner and healthier look.

Do You Need to Take Supplements?

Supplements are any substances that are put into your body in order to even out nutrition and your system. Taking supplements have become a popular method in order to maintain health as well as change the way in which your body functions. However, it is often asked whether you need to take supplements and what they will do to your body.

The major concern that is part of taking supplements is why you are taking them. Supplements are known to balance out the nutrients that you may not be getting in any of your regular meals. Because of this, it is important to look into what you are getting in your every day meals, and then know what supplements you need to take. If you take too many supplements, it can cause a problem with your system.

One of the major reasons for taking supplements is for self-medication. There are several that have found that because they were not receiving the right nutritious values in their food, it has caused for more illness to occur. Because of this, supplements become an easy way for one to rebalance their system and fight off the illness with vitamins that are in the immune system.

Another reason why several will take supplements is to help with the aging process. As one grows older, they lose bone density, muscle mass and nutrients at a quicker pace. Because their body is beginning to change, it allows for more vitamins to need to be a part of their daily diet. This will help the body to be able to maintain its natural nutritional value.

If you are questioning whether you should take supplements, you should talk to a professional. Your body needs a balance of nutrition and vitamins. However, if you are already eating a balanced diet, the use of supplements can cause your body to move out of balance in its functioning. Keeping track of what you are eating as well as knowing what is right for your health in the way of supplements by asking a professional can help you to determine what you need.

In relation to this, if you are just starting out with supplements, know how much to take in order to allow your body to adjust. It is said that you should only take about half of the recommended vitamins to begin, and then work up what you need. If you are taking other medications, don’t begin taking supplements until you know that they can work together. You should also make sure that your body is at normal functioning levels, especially with things such as blood pressure, as a change in supplemental material can cause problems.

Supplements and vitamins as part of a diet can help your body to have the right nutrients available, making it easier for the system to function. However, you should know what you need as well as how much of what you need. It is better to find what the balance in your body is before you take a supplement before automatically turning to a supplement or vitamin. While several different types of vitamins are becoming popular, you should first know what your individual needs are.

Anti Virus Aromatherapy

Today’s world is full of sickness and disease. The fear of Bird Flu is prevalent and the devasting effect of HIV has continued to ravage nations worldwide. It isn’t just the heavyweight viruses that we have to look out for either. Even viruses that we have been familiar with for the past 100 years may still pose devasting consequences for those who have depressed immune systems.

Antiviral drugs are very important in the fight against viruses. Antiviral medications are similar to antibiotics however they are specifically targeted towards the destruction of viruses. Antiviral medication is an essential weapon in the fight against HIV. There are also antiviral medications that have been successfully used against Herpes Virus, Hepatitis B and C, and other viruses. The field of antiviral medicine is constantly exploring new methods and procedures in the hopes of creating medicines that will effectively conquer other viruses.

Due to the prevalence of HIV and the widespread devastation of this virus, a large amount of money, power, and influence has been put upon scientific research to develop effective medications to help inhibit the spread, growth, and replication of HIV. This research has opened the door to many new antiviral medications that are believed to have far reaching benefits beyond the treatment of HIV.

As science continues to research and develop more antiviral drugs, we can only wonder what the future will hold. Many of the immunizations that have been prevalent over the past century have been in attempts to ward off massive outbreaks of viral based diseases that had the potential to cripple, maim, and kill. Many people find the field of immunology to have many controversies, and often people today are choosing not to immunize their children. It may be that one day, antiviral medications will surface that can stop Polio or Rubella as soon as it appears, making the need for an immunization a preference of choice, not the standard for all people.

It is also important to realize that antiviral medication has only been in existence for the past 20 years. It is still essentially in an experimental form. However, the signs look increasingly promising for the future. People who have been diagnosed with HIV are living longer and are having more success with these new medications then when HIV first made its appearance on a grand scale in the 1980’s. One day, we may see an antiviral medication for all viruses readily available for all citizens.

Aromatherapy can help fight viral infections due to the fact that many plants and herbs have natural viral fighting properties. Some of the most common herbs that have natural antiviral properties include: Barberry, Beth Root, Black Walnut, Buchu, Echinacea, Garlic, Goldenseal, Chaparral, Juniper Berry, Myrrh, Nettle, Plantain, Rosemary, White Oak, Thyme, Saw Palmetto, and Oregon Grape Root. These herbs also carry antibiotic an antiseptic properties as well.

It is important to boost the immune system through nutrition and aromatherapy as well. Your Immune System is your first line of defense to fight viruses and to stop them in their tracks. You can encourage your Immune System with herbs such as Echinacea, Garlic, and Thyme.

Tea Tree, Ravensara, and Cedar are powerful herbs that all have antiviral properties as well. Whenever you are using an essential oil in Aromatherapy, be sure to follow all safety precautions and use the oil in diluted form.

What Vitamins or Minerals Should You Be Taking?

It has been noted that vitamins and minerals are essential for functioning on a daily basis with both internal and external health. However, vitamins should provide a balance to your health, not problems with functioning. Having too much as well as too little vitamins in your system may cause several problems. Because of this, it is important to know which vitamins you should be taking, as well as how much of each.

The need for vitamins and how much you need will differ from many factors. Individual needs and builds are different from person to person. Knowing what your individual make-up is, genetically as well as in relation to things such as metabolism is the first step in determining what you need. You can either see a physician or health provider in order to determine what your needs are.

From here, you can determine what each vitamin will do for your health. This will vary according to age, gender and what your specific needs are. For example, a youth or young adult will need more calcium in their system, as their bone density is growing at this time. Women that are pregnant will need to take more folic acid in order to provide for their child. As you become older, changes will differ as well as needs. Depending on where you are in life and what your specific needs are will make a difference in the amount that you are taking. You can determine how much you need by researching online or look at the daily recommendations list available from health departments.

From here, you can see what each vitamin will provide. This can then be measured in relation to what your eating habits are. It will be necessary to look at the various factors in relation to vitamins to help you in deciding what is best to take. There are several that will simply take a multi-vitamin in relation to the food intake that they have. However, because of individual builds and needs, different vitamins are used to help with balance.

The most important thing to consider when looking into vitamins is what your needs are. When doing this, you can do research online for what recommendations are. You can also look into standards of what you should be taking. These are available from research as well as standards from the US food administration. There are several research reports as well as ideals for what vitamins you should be taking and which ones you shouldn’t.

Knowing your needs as well as understanding how your diet should work will help you in determining which vitamins to take. This is an important step in determining your health and nutrition. Vitamins and minerals are essential in providing your body with certain ways of functioning. Without them in place, health problems can occur as the body needs this support going to it constantly. If you are interested in remaining healthy, then taking an interest in understanding what vitamins to take will determine proper functioning.

Appetite Control and Aromatherapy

Every day you see the news reports of how more and more Americans are becoming obese. Many people live on diets that are full of sugars, starch, over processed foods, and white flour. This horrible, nutrient depleted diet combined with sedentary lifestyles has caused one of the largest epidemics of obesity this country has ever known. When living in a society that is obsessed with the human figure and appearance, obesity can have more devastating effects on a person then an expanding waist size.

Obesity can lead to many serious illnesses such as heart disease, high blood pressure, circulatory problems, respiratory problems, Diabetes, and more. The larger we become, the more likely we are to be inactive, and without living a life of daily moving the body, and pumping fresh oxygenated blood throughout the system, the results are dire and the consequences may be deadly.

There are many reasons why people overeat, and the root of the problem may be emotional rather than physical. It is important that for those who are struggling with obesity take the time to do the inner work of self-realization and healing to begin to deal with the underlying issues of why they overeat. It is important to determine if your overeating is a result of emotional triggers such as sadness, depression, anger, or low self esteem. Some people tend to overeat when they are bored. They have nothing else to do and want to feed themselves. Others may have learned to overeat to comfort themselves when they were younger and in a lonely or traumatic experience. It is vital to the ultimate health and success of every person to determine what triggers his or her addiction to food. To accompany the inner work, which must be done, it is also important to take a look at diet and take the necessary steps to replace unhealthy foods and snacks with their healthy counterparts. This means replacing refined white flour, sugar, and empty calories with fruits and vegetables.

It is important to consume foods that are as close to their “natural” or “live” state. Fruits and vegetables should be eaten in “raw” organic form whenever possible. Another important change that must be made is in the area of exercise. It is crucially important to realize that the person who has been living a sedentary lifestyle is not in physical shape to immediately handle a strenuous workout. The exercise changes that need to be made should focus more on routine then performance. To begin these lifestyle changes, commitment and practice should be the goal while the actual exercise should be a series of gentle movements such as a daily walk, swimming, or incorporating yoga to the lifestyle. Once the habit forms of daily exercising, then the focus may shift to adding strength training, or more cardiovascular workouts. Begin by simply moving every day for at least 20 minutes and then take it from there.

Aromatherapy is very beneficial in helping to decrease appetite. This is a powerful way to reinforce the new way of thinking and overcoming the addiction to food. It is highly effective with those who are “comfort food” eaters. When a craving comes on, and you know that you do not need to eat for your survival, but want to eat out of boredom, depression, or another emotional reason, you can satisfy the craving with Aromatherapy. Also, try drinking more water. It is vital that you consume enough water daily to maintain your body in perfect form, and often the brain will signify that it is thirsty, and we mistakenly feed it instead.

For a wonderful appetite controlling scent add 1 drop of Clary Sage, 1 drop of Sandalwood, and 1 drop of Ylang Ylang essential oils and blend. If you would like to make this into massage oil, add it to carrier oil and apply on pressure points. It may be used in an inhalant for immediate relief of cravings, in an Aromatic bath, or in the form of Aromatherapy candles.

Easing the Pain of Arthritis with Simple Yoga Practices

Files under Yoga | No Comments »

Arthritis can be just an occasional pain in some fingers or joint to an incapacitating pain that keeps you from enjoying life to the fullest. Most doctors agree that some form of regular exercise can help by keeping our muscle tone intact and in helping to prevent stiffness in the joints. Whatever your level of arthritis is, it can be helped by the practice of Yoga.

When the pain of arthritis hits, it causes the rest of the body to stiffen up to keep the part that’s hurting from hurting more. Most of us would respond to that by doing even less exercise, but inactivity is the worse solution to combating the pain of arthritis. Inactivity weakens the muscles and can increase stiffness and pain. Yoga encourages you to keep moving, although gently, to allow your body to heal and preserve muscle tone. Yoga practice also helps you psychologically, it increases your confidence that you can still function as a normal person and do all the regular activities you do in a day. You don’t have to let arthritis confine you to a wheelchair.

Some gentle Yoga exercises begin with movements while sitting in a chair. These are adaptations of the regular Yoga poses, and help to loosen joints and relax muscle groups. With a regular breathing pattern, you will gradually increase the level of difficulty in your Yoga practice. Breathing helps bring fresh blood and the proper nutrients to muscle tissue. It also helps relieve physical and emotional tension. As you slowly start to loosen up from these gentler Yoga movements, you can gradually add standing poses to your routine. By adding additional Yoga poses, you are improving strength, flexibility, and balance. If it’s necessary, do your routine with a sturdy chair as a prop so you will feel safer and steadier. As time goes by and you become more flexible you can gradually stop using supports. If you can’t, don’t beat yourself up because of it that defeats the purpose of Yoga. The idea is to relax and loosen the muscles. Yoga will also make those joints less painful.

Self-massage is also a way to bring improved circulation and warmth to the joints affected by arthritis. The American Yoga Association has instructional tapes and books to show you how to effectively massage the areas of pain.

Breathing, meditation and other relaxation techniques should be a part of your daily routine. They help improve respiration, ease anxiety, and help take your mind off the pain. Oxygen flooding the body gives relief for both physical and emotional tension and the best part of that is, you can do it anywhere! There are many books and tapes that are developed to help with coping with the pain of arthritis.

Arthritis doesn’t have to be a disease that will turn into an insurmountable disability. By practicing breathing, gentle exercises, and meditating every day you can rebuild your strength and pursue your daily activities with renewed energy, better health, and less pain.

Allergies, Pollen and Aromatherapy

Allergies to pollen, dust, animals, and food are prevalent and more people are being diagnosed with allergies ever day. Some of the symptoms of an allergy may be mild, while others can be so severe that they become life threatening. Some people suffer allergies only during certain months, when pollen count is high. Others may be allergic to pet dander and may have an allergic reaction year round.

The root of an allergy is found deep within the Immune System. In fact, an allergy is basically that your immune system is reacting in a harsh way to a substance that otherwise would cause no reaction. However, these reactions may be mild such as red watery eyes, hives on the skin, itchiness, sneezing or a runny nose and they may be as severe as the inability to breathe, shock, and even death.

There is no way to predict if someone has an allergy, it is discovered after someone has been exposed to the “triggering” factor. A trigger is the substance that is causing the allergic reaction. There are however tests that may be taken to determine if an allergy to a certain substance is present. The main test used to diagnose an allergy is a “skin test”. The Skin Test is performed by making a small prick in the skin with a minute amount of the potential “allergen”. This could be a small amount of pollen, etc. Within 30 minutes, the site where the test was made is checked for reactions such as redness, or hives.

Some of the symptoms of an allergy include runny nose, sneezing, redness and itching in the eyes, wheezing, asthma, coughing, hives, skin rashes, and eczema. Most people who know that they are allergic to a particular substance will avoid contact with the allergen. People who know they are allergic to pollen, will avoid going out during the times of highest pollen count and those who have food allergies will avoid eating that food at all costs.

Some of the most common substances that people are allergic to include plant pollen such as Oak Trees, Rag Weed, and Birch Trees, mold spores, peanuts, eggs, chocolate, milk, soy, seafood, bee stings, animal dander, cockroaches, and dust mites.

The reasons why people develop allergies is a subject of debate. Some people believe that allergies are a product of genetics, basically, if your parents had allergies, you will too. Some look to ethnicity and has found that some forms of allergies are more prevalent in certain ethnic groups. There is new research being done looking for a link between immunizations and allergies. The belief is that due to immunizations, the immune system becomes “depressed” and therefore shows this change by becoming “overly sensitive” to normal stimuli.

Aromatherapy can be very effective in the treatment of allergies. You can treat many symptoms as they appear and some herbs have natural immunity building properties that may help with allergies and their reactions. Some of the best herbs used with allergies include Lemon, Roman Chamomile, and Eucalyptus. If you feel an allergic reaction coming on, you can add these essential oils into a hot tub and soak for at least 20 minutes.

Nutrition and Aging

As we become older, our nutrition begins to change. Our body reacts to age by re-balancing different areas in our body. Being aware of what our body needs in order to perform the right maintenance is important. By doing this, you can continuously look and feel younger, despite the age that you are.

The first thing that needs to be consistent is maintaining the right dietary needs. As your body ages, it is in more of a need for balanced and healthy meals. If it doesn’t have the right nutrients moving through the body, it can cause more severe problems at a faster rate. As you age, your body stops growing and instead needs to keep a consistent level of nutrients. Make sure that your body is getting the right supply of vitamins and supplements for maintenance work.

Some of the major supplements that older and aging people need are calcium, fiber, iron, vitamin C, protein, vitamin A and folacin. These specific vitamins help with adding strength and extra energies that your body needs in order to continue moving things consistently through its body. Knowing which supplements you will need to re-balance your body can help with you feeling healthier and having more energy.

Physical activity also needs to remain as one of the important parts of aging. It is easy for your body to lose bone density, muscle mass and have pains that are more consistent throughout different places in your body. By staying active and exercising on a consistent basis, it will help your body to not lose the muscle, tissue and bone that it needs in order to stay healthy with energy. There are several places where one can go in order to find how to stay at the best health while aging. Each of these places can offer specific exercises in order to help relieve pain and keep the bone density and muscle mass at a consistent level.

Another thing to keep in mind is that senses will begin to change. Loss of hearing and eyesight are two of the major problems that seem to begin to occur as one gets older. Smell and taste also begin to lose some of their perspective. There are several specialists that can help you to feel comfortable and give you the right tools if this starts to happen. You can always change food flavors that you eat in order to help with smell and taste. It is important to make sure that the change in your senses doesn’t get in the way of your normal and comfortable living.

Being aware of changing health is the first step to take when you are aging. From here, you can add the proper supplements and exercise routines to make sure that your body stays healthy and can continue functioning. While your body is going to naturally age and the functions in your body will change, you can balance this out by taking care of the different parts of your body and providing your body with different techniques to allow you to feel healthy.

Liposuction - Techniques

There are different liposuction techniques available. The basic technique involves small incisions being made on the affected area and a narrow tube or cannula, which is attached to a vacuum that sucks the fat that lies deep beneath the skin. This basic technique is used in all patients although there are several variations available.

Fluid Injection
A technique known as Fluid Injection involves a medicated solution being injected into the fatty areas prior to the fat being removed is a popular method currently being used. The fluid is a combination of intravenous salt solution and a local anaesthetic along with a drug that contract’s the body’s blood vessels. This helps the fat detach easier, reduces the blood loss and provides the patient with anaesthesia during the after the procedure. The fluid is injected to help reduce the amount of bruising following the surgery.

Tumescent Technique
The ‘Tumescent Technique’ involved the surgeon injecting large volumes of fluid, up to three times the amount of far removed. The tumescent liposuction technique is usually performed on those patients who require a local anaesthetic, although the procedure usually takes longer (sometimes 4-5 hours) than the traditional liposuction. The fluid contains enough anaesthetic so additional anaesthesia is not always needed.

Super-wet Technique
Another technique similar to the tumescent technique is the ‘Super-wet Technique.’ The difference is – lesser amounts of fluids are used. This techniques involves the amount of fluid is equal to the amount of fat that is to be removed. IV sedation is often required for this technique and sometimes a patient may need a general anaesthetic. This surgical method usually takes one to two hours.

Ultrasound Assisted Lipoplasty
Ultrasound Assisted Lipoplasty (UAL) is another liposuction technique where a special cannula that creates ultrasonic energy is used. As is passes through the fatty areas, the energy explodes to fat cell walls and the fat is liquidised. The fat is then removed using the traditional liposuction technique.
This technique can improve the effectiveness of liposuction on fibrous areas of the body, for example, the upper back or the male breast. The ease of the process is also improved. This method is often used in secondary procedure when an enhances precision is requires. This method generally takes longer to perform than the traditional liposuction method.

There will be a noticeable different in the body’s shape soon after the completion of the surgery. It must also be remembered that improvement will be even more noticeable after four to six weeks, when the swelling has settled down. Any persistent or mild swelling has usually settled down after three months and the contour will become visible. Providing that your expectations were realistic, you should be satisfied with the results of the liposuction surgery and will have more confidence when wearing a wider variety of clothes. You should be able to maintain your new shape by eating a healthy diet and taking regular exercise.
