Adult Dilemmas in Dealing with Eczema

Files under Eczema | No Comments »

Many people dismiss eczema as a minor inconvenience or irritation and do not fully comprehend the extent to which it can affect the normal functioning of a person’s life. Besides the physical appearance and discomfort of it, the dry, red, itchy and inflamed skin also exacts a terrible psychological toll on its sufferers’ lives.

In 2004 the National Eczema Society as well as a series of global patient support groups backed a study that was the biggest and most comprehensive study of its kind ever conducted anywhere in the world. The study, which was called ISOLATE (which stood for International Study Of Life with ATopic Eczema) looked at the emotional and psychological cost of living with atopic eczema (the most widespread type of eczema). The individuals who participated in the study equaled two thousand and they hailed from eight different countries, which included France, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, the United States and the UK. They chose a good cross section of people, some who suffered from moderate eczema, and all the way up to those who suffered with the severest type of eczema.

The study showed that an astounding one quarter of the people interviewed had at one point or other been teased or bullied by others because of their skin condition. For a number of people whose eczema started in childhood and improved only slightly as they aged, the problems for them carried into their adulthood. Many people interviewed for the study felt that the skin condition was a “curse” that had charted the course of their lives and caused damage at every bend in the road.

For example many people described workplace related problems whereby they had to endure cruel comments being said sometimes to their face or other times whispered behind their backs, constant stares and a lack of knowledge about the disorder. Many co-workers of these individuals mistakenly believed that by touching a surface, such as a chair or desk, that the eczema patient had touched, they could “catch” the disease.

Besides the blatant discrimination at their place of work, one out of every seven patients interviewed firmly believed that their careers were thwarted by their skin condition. Many cited problems in regards to surviving job interviews as well as feeling that their choice of careers was limited, not because of lack of experience, education or knowledge but because of their skin conditions.

An eczema patient’s personal life can also be problematic. Many sufferers reported that dating and even the choice not to marry came about as a result of their skin disorder. Twenty percent of the people interviewed strongly believed that finding a mate was made worse because of their skin problem and forty-three percent admitted to feeling insecure and awkward in intimate situations with a partner, especially during times of the worst flare-ups. Many eczema patients suffer from a self of low self-esteem, suffer constant bouts of depression, as well as embarrassment and frustration at their life situation because of their skin condition. Many people who suffer from this skin condition feel the impact in many areas of their lives. While it may be a physical manifestation of a problem, it easily becomes a psychological quagmire. The ISOLATE survey found that seventy-five percent of the eczema patients interviewed admit that, “Being able to control their eczema effectively would be the single most important improvement to their quality of life.”

Sleep Apnoea and Snoring

When it comes to sleeping disorders, sleep apnoea and snoring are two that commonly come to mind. Few people know the differences between the two disorders, and the profound effects on your health they can have. What one may think is simple, normal snoring, can sometimes be a much more serious condition. Here are some of the properties of the two disorders, and how to distinguish them:

Simple snoring, known as primary snoring, is the result of an obstruction of air flow to the passages at the back of the mouth and the back of the throat. Your body is attempting to force air flow through these passages to get the oxygen it vitally needs to perform everyday functions. Snoring occurs where the tongue and the upper part of the throat meet the uvula and the soft palate, striking each other and vibrating while trying to breathe. Common reasons for snoring are suffering from poor muscle tone in the tongue and throat, the use of alcohol, antihistamines, or sleeping pills, excessive throat tissue bulk (often due to obesity), and obstructed nasal cavities.

Primary snoring, while not as harmful as sleep apnoea, also has many adverse health effects that need to be taken under consideration if you or someone you love snores. Struggling violently to breathe whilst snoring can cause Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome, or UARS, which is a precursor to sleep apnoea which results in extreme sleepiness, with such dangerous side-effects as falling asleep at the wheel whilst driving an automobile.

Sleep apnoea is a very serious condition. It occurs when a snorer’s issue deteriorates to the point where their body actually experiences a lack of oxygen, causing pauses in breathing for at least 10 seconds, with as many as hundreds of pauses per night of sleep. This problem can cause daytime sleepiness, a 7 to 12 fold increase in automobile accidents, irritability, personality change, restless sleep, headaches, and shortness of breath. A long term exposure to sleep apnoea can result in such problems as high blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythms, as well as heart failure and death. With such issues at hand as these, you can see why snoring can develop into such a serious problem. It is important to try your best to remedy the problem before it gets too bad to contain it. For example, if you are a snorer who only snores while lying on their back, there are a couple of different methods for helping the issue.

One solution to the problem that seems to work in most cases is to put a tennis ball into a sock and pin it to the back of your pants. The uncomfortable tennis ball will force your body into not sleeping on your back. Another method involves taking away the number of pillows you sleep on. The more pillows you use, the higher the angle your air passages must bend, giving a chance for further obstruction. Research the causes of snoring, and try to pinpoint why you might be experiencing the symptoms. Once you’ve got it figured out, you’re halfway to recovery. Good luck!

Type 1 diabetes

Files under Diabetes | No Comments »

Type 1 diabetes is a disease that affects one for their entire life. This sickness can occur out of nowhere without any warning signs. Also commonly known as Juvenile diabetes due to the fact that it most commonly strikes when a person is a child or an adolescent, the name may be deceiving. While juveniles are most commonly struck, and people under 30 are most at risk, adults and senior citizens run the risk of developing Type 1 diabetes as well. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas’ beta cells produce little to no insulin. Insulin is a hormone that permits the sugar glucose to enter cells of the body. When a cell receives glucose, it uses it as fuel. When a person has a decreased level of insulin, the glucose that is supposed to be sent out to fuel the body’s cells begins to build up in the bloodstream. While high levels of insulin in the bloodstream are unable to be used by the body, increased hunger can occur as the body yearns for the energy it needs. These high glucose levels in the bloodstream make the afflicted person feel an increased need to urinate. This, in turn, makes a person excessively thirsty.

After having diabetes for anywhere from 5 years to 10 years, the beta cells that create insulin may be completely damaged beyond repair. The body stops producing insulin, and the person suffering from the disease is forced to rely completely on an outside insulin source. While we know much of the way diabetes functions, we are still left in the dark as to what causes it to occur. Type 1 diabetes is the least common form of diabetes, accounting for around 3 percent of all new cases. 1 in 7,000 children are affected every year by this chronic illness.

If diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, there are a host of issues that a person needs to address. Blood glucose levels need to be monitored as often as 6 times per day with a prick of the finger or another source of blood. If the levels are too high, diabetes patients face the problem of a hyperglycemic reaction. Consequently, if blood glucose levels are too low, the patient runs the risk of a hypoglycemic reaction. For this reason, in addition to monitoring the levels, diabetes sufferers need to maintain their glucose through injections of insulin, a proper diet, and exercise. Low blood glucose levels can be heightened by eating something with sugar. Soda and fruit juice are two commonly used remedies for a low glucose level. If the glucose in the bloodstream is too high, more specific actions need to be taken that involve a trip to the hospital. High glucose levels can cause a poisoning of the blood that can be fatal if unaddressed.

All in all, people that are afflicted with Type 1 diabetes have a lot of responsibilities to take on when taking care of their condition. Monitoring glucose levels is of utmost importance, and taking proper insulin doses as well as altering your diet and exercise to fit your body’s need are important steps to living with this chronic illness.

Banishing Cellulite

Files under Cellulite | No Comments »

Cellulite is persistent. There is no permanent cure for cellulite; it is a condition that will recur just as soon as treatments stop or old habits and lifestyles are lapsed back into.

Once a battle is started against cellulite it must persist otherwise the ‘enemy forces’ will quickly overcome the ‘good guys’ and re-establish themselves under the skin of the hips, thighs and buttocks.

All women have a degree of cellulite. It is worse for some than others and it is more visible in some than others. The good news is that there are a number of things that can be done to improve the condition.

For those who are really serious about banishing cellulite they must resign themselves to incorporating treatment into their daily personal care regime in much the same way as they clean their teeth twice a day. It is only through persistent and regular treatment that the condition will improve.

A variety of creams and lotions are offered to combat cellulite and these work in different ways. Some work on the surface of skin, merely camouflaging the characteristic cellulite bumps. Others penetrate the outer layer of the skin and work to stimulate circulation to affected areas. This increased circulation improves the transport of nutrients, fluid and oxygen to the connective tissue and also assists with the elimination of waste products and toxins.

Mechanical treatments of cellulite are effective – although once again the problem will recur if the treatments are not continued. Massage works in much the same way as many of the creams available by stimulating circulation of both the blood and lymph. Another procedure, available in salons and health clubs, involves having the affected areas pressed by what is effectively a giant rolling pin. This latter mechanical treatment is expensive, painful and can lead to bruising so is not for the faint hearted.

There are a number of treatments offered that are taken by mouth and extra special care must be taken to examine the labels of these to ensure there are no substances included that might react with any medications that may have been prescribed for other health related conditions.

The problem with many of the treatments offered is the lack of real scientific proof of their efficacy. There is also no proof to say that the products do not work. Every individual has a slightly different physiology and it is often worth trying treatments – even if they have not worked for others – personal recommendation is not always a good thing on which to base a purchasing decision.

Most cellulite treatments that are commercially available are relatively ‘young’ and have not yet been tested over time – for this reason it is important to proceed with caution, especially when considering any remedy that is to be taken internally or which is to be absorbed through the skin.

Whilst it is tempting to be the first to try new products, it is often advisable to wait until there are product reviews available. There is no reason why you should not banish your cellulite provided you are willing to do the work and are not expecting, at the moment, to find a magic pill or potion that will do it for you.

Let The Kids Join In Your Yoga Routine!

Files under Yoga | No Comments »

A shocking statistic was given on the news yesterday. The report says 50 percent of our children will grow up to be obese adults. Inactivity and junk food are making our kids unhealthy. Children sit in front of the television set, or watch movies or play video games instead of getting outside and playing like the adults of today did. The result is children who are couch potatoes and are in real danger of health related problems. The study also went on to say that children could benefit from Yoga. Sure, you say, how do you get a 2 year old to sit in one position for more than 30 seconds?

Yoga classes for children are offered and if you have ever watched one, you would be amazed at what they can do. No, it’s not your traditional quiet, meditative Yoga routine for a small child, but Yoga can be fun as well as healthy for a toddler or child. Classes designed for children offer the fun of barking like a dog while doing the Downward Facing Dog pose. Jumping around like Kangaroos is another fun part of a child’s Yoga class. The idea is to get them used to moving around, make it a part of their routine and we can only hope they will continue that habit for life.

One Yoga instructor practices with his small son and when he is doing the Bridge Pose, the toddler crawls under him and makes noises like a boat. So how is that helping the adult? It’s keeping them in the present, which is one of the goals of Yoga. Showing his son that Yoga and proper breathing will help him to become an active productive adult.

When introducing your toddler or child to Yoga, don’t make them be little grown-ups. Remember to get down on their level. Have fun with them; make it a fun activity time. You can’t really expect a child to be as serious as an adult. The short attention span of a young child makes it impossible for them to sit in one pose as an adult would. Explore the poses with your child, let them flow naturally and center your attention on them and what you are doing now. Again, that’s one of the reasons to practice Yoga, to keep you in the moment and help you enjoy the time you have right now.

A child is just that, a child, if we think on their level and allow them to go at their own pace they will reap the benefits later in life. With you as an example, they will look forward to your time together two or three times a week, and encourage them to keep active. Avoiding obesity as a young adult, and stiffness and soreness when they’re older is a benefit to start Yoga with them when they are small. You can make Yoga and quiet times an intricate part of their lives.

So, help your child grow into a healthy adult while helping yourself at the same time.
Show and teach them by practicing with them and oh; have fun doing it!

Snoring and Relationships

How many times have you complained to a friend about the incessant snoring of your partner? You’ve talked about how tired you feel with the endless interruptions of your nights sleep because your husband’s snoring is window shattering loud. Or maybe you’ve compared it to a motorcycle engine, a thunderstorm or a chainsaw. If so, you are not alone. Women all across the world have the same problem. For you guys whose wives snore, you have to admit the noise is not as loud and rarely does it disturb your sleep. For women with snoring parents it is quiet different. Men simply snore louder.

Believe it or not snoring has become such an insurmountable problem that it has become grounds for divorce. The lack of sleep, base on the nighttime snore serenade, of both partners can create multiple problems in a relationship. Two overtired people are not as likely to be patient with each other. One blames the other for their lack of sleep. The snorer becomes fed up with the daily blame while still having to cope with his own state of tiredness. Work suffers for both of them and so does their home life.

In studies done on snoring and relationships over half the couples agreed that the nightly noise caused severe arguments. Eighty percent said they often slept in another room just to try and get a good night sleep. Ten percent said it was bad enough that they thought seriously about leaving their spouse. Often the pleas of the non-snoring partner are ignored, as the snorer does not believe anything can be done. This is seen as a very negative reaction by the non-snorer who often becomes convinced that her partner is just doing it to annoy her. This impacts on the whole relationship. It also impacts on the intimate relationship of the couple in a negative way. Twenty five percent of couples being studied confirmed that problem. As well, if a couple chooses to sleep in separate rooms, it not only affects their sex life, but also affects the end of the night relax and chat time that a couple shares. In a relationship these are important non-sexual intimate moments that play a pivotal role in keeping two people tuned into one another.

Sometimes it gets to a point where the couple must decide if their relationship is worth rescuing. They’re spending less time together, sleeping in separate rooms or the non-snoring partner is either spending too much of the night awake or with a pillow over her ears. Fortunately, if you value your partner there are things that can be done to save the relationship. Begin by seeing your doctor. That could determine the next step in what snoring cures to try. Some may be no more than simple lifestyle changes while others may include the use of appliances or other devices. After all the nighttime difficulties, if you want to keep your relationship on track sometimes sacrifices are needed on both sides.

Dust Mites and Other Irritants that Affect the Eczema-Prone

Files under Eczema | No Comments »

Eczema is often caused by irritants in the immediate environment. Dust mite protein is the number one indoor allergen (or irritant) to affect eczema sufferers. Approximately ten percent of the general population develops an allergy to dust mites. The symptoms of an allergic reaction to dust mites include eyes that are itchy and watery, sneezing, a runny nose, nasal congestion, ears that are “stuffed up” and difficult to hear out of, chronic respiratory problems such as head colds and post nasal drip, asthma and the most widespread form of eczema- atopic dermatitis.

Dust mites cannot be seen with the human naked eye. They are extremely small, are shaped like an oval, have eight legs and are cream in color. Dust mites have sticky pads on their feet that enable them to burrow into almost any kind of fiber in your home. They are most often found taking up residence in furniture and carpeting. It is only the particles of dead dust mites that can efficiently be cleaned up with a vacuum cleaner. It’s not pretty but dust mites stay alive and build in strength by consuming the shed skin of people as well as human fingernails as hair. They also eat animal fur, bacteria, fungi and pollen. Dust mites thrive in environments where the humidity is anywhere in the area of seventy to eighty percent. They also require temperatures anywhere between seventy-five and eighty degrees. A humidity level of below forty will not allow dust mites to live or thrive for very long. It is important to keep dust mites out of your home as much as possible to avoid eczema flare-ups.

There are a variety of other irritants that can cause eczema to flare-up with greater frequency and also to cause the intensity of the breakouts to be worse. Avoid harsh laundry detergents and always rinse your clothes twice with cool water when you wash them. Avoid household cleaners, disinfectants, air sprays and other common household substances that cause you to sneeze, itch excessively, develop a stuffy nose and a sore throat. Buy mild natural or organic cleaners for around your home and always spray them away from your face. Wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth and never mix cleaners as this can also cause you to pass out on the spot.

Avoid chlorine, solvents (such as paint thinners or turpentine), mineral oil as well as sand (as in the sand found in a child’s sandbox) and dust particles. Cigarette smoke bothers a lot of eczema patients and make sure not to do it yourself! Wool is a very scratchy fiber that can irritate a case of eczema tremendously so stick with synthetic fibers. Cotton is the best choice as it is soft against the skin, it absorbs sweat well and it is a breathable fabric.

Many cosmetic, skincare and beauty products contain a scent of some form or another as well as alcohol (such as skin astringents). Don’t use these types of products on your skin. Buy mild soaps, body cleansers and moisturizers that soothe and comfort skin and not aggravate it. Forego bubble bath, which is very drying to the skin, and instead reach for an emollient oil or a colloidal oatmeal bath to make your skin feel soft, supple and normal.

Dealing With Diabetes At School

Files under Diabetes | No Comments »

There are some important informational items schools, teachers, and classmates need to know about diabetes. It’s important that your school be prepared for any emergency that should arise about your child’s diabetes. The school nurse should be part of the care team at school. Everyone who has contact with a child with diabetes needs to be ready to take care of providing the necessary support needed.

One important point to remember is, always take a diabetic child seriously if he makes a request for a drink of water, needs a snack, or needs to use the rest room. The child’s body is telling them what they need to remain healthy. Remember that a child with diabetes has normal interests and dreams the same dreams of other children. It’s important that a child with diabetes be treated as normal as possible. There should always be open lines of communication between the classroom and home.

Telling classmates the child has diabetes is all right as long as it is presented in a positive way. The class should be aware of possible diabetes emergencies and they should know they are kids just like them.

How do you tell classmates and what do you tell them? Here are a few hints. A family member may want to do a short presentation to the class about the disease. They could provide information according to their education and be prepared to answer questions. Questions will be asked; children are naturally curious and will honest, truthful answers to their questions.

The class should be told in terms they can understand, what diabetes is, and how it affects the body. Let them know that children with diabetes will take shots to control the disease. Tell them about blood sugar and how important it is the brain and nervous center. The signs of an insulin reaction may be an important part of this presentation.

Explaining chemical changes that occur in the body of a diabetic will help them understand when low blood sugar causes unusual behavior in their classmate. Unusual anger, they may become grouchy, have headaches, fall asleep unexpectedly, or be confused about simple things.

Children should know that a diabetic child could be having so much fun or they are doing something interesting and may not notice they are having signs of low blood sugar. It is important to remember that children with diabetes should stay away from simple sugar. Though they are not supposed to have sweets, eating sugar cubes, a piece of candy, fruit juice, or soda pop will help bring their sugar levels up.

Children should be told that when a person with diabetes react to chemical changes because of diabetes, they may act shaky, butterflies in their stomach, sweating, and looking pale. If the classmate is preparing to give an oral report or to take an important test, they may find their blood sugar will drop. Some symptoms may show up that require them to have a small snack to keep their blood sugar levels under control.

Alternative Therapies for Getting Rid of Cellulite

Files under Cellulite | No Comments »

When you suffer with cellulite, you may immediately think that surgery such as liposuction would be the best alternative. The thing to remember however about it is that cosmetic surgery is is not always the safest or even the most effective way to deal with cellulite. In fact, there is a chance that even if you do get liposuction, you will still have cellulite in the same places. Instead of looking toward surgery for your treatments, you might want to consider alternative treatments for getting rid of cellulite. There are many things to try, and although they won’t likely cure your cellulite forever, they will help reduce the appearance of it, which is always a good thing. In addition, they are safer than surgery, which is an even better thing!

Mesotherapy & Cellulite

Mesotherapy is a treatment for cellulite that is extremely popular in Europe. In fact, it was actually a French doctor, Dr. Pistor that created this phenomenal alternative therapy in 1952. Mesotherapy actually consists of the cellulite ridden patient getting injections into and around the site where they experience cellulite. The injections themselves are made from natural substances like minerals, vitamins, and amino acids. The patients go through this process once a week for several months and typically get great results. The process can be expensive and the mesotherapy experts can be difficult to locate, but the overall conclusion is traditionally good.

Wraps & Cellulite

One treatment many women like to use for their cellulite is the body wrap. While the experts still are not too sure about body wraps, they do provide relaxation for those who get them, so even if you just want to relax, you can try one. The basics of the body wrap are that it is supposed to push toxins out of your body and leave you with less water weight and better contouring. This can work when it comes to cellulite because the wrap can help stimulate lymphatic flow in the skin cells which can help reduce the look of your cellulite.

Exercise & Cellulite

One of the most over looked therapies for cellulite is good, old-fashioned exercise. Exercise is a great way to reduce the appearance of cellulite. In fact, it also helps your body is so many other ways, you should be doing it regularly anyhow. It seems that walking and bicycling are two of the most beneficial exercises when it comes to cellulite. Both target areas that cellulite is most common to, such as legs and buttocks. So, if you can work a walk or a biking trek into your schedule at least once a day, you will likely notice a change in your cellulite as well.

So, instead of talking with your doctor about cosmetic surgery, talk to him or her about the possible alternative therapies you can use to help reduce the appearance of your cellulite. Your doctor might have more therapies for you to try as well. There are ways to make your cellulite more noticeable without having to go under the knife.

Testing for diabetes

Files under Diabetes | No Comments »

Do you think that you or someone you know may have developed diabetes? If so, there are tests that you can take to accurately determine if diabetes is present. These tests include a monitoring of blood sugar levels by a medical laboratory. Abnormal blood sugar levels are the key to diagnosing diabetes, and they are also the reason the affliction needs to be taken so seriously. There are two types of diabetes that one may contract.

Type I diabetes occurs when the beta cells that are located inside one’s pancreas begin to be attacked by the rest of the body, causing them to stop production of insulin. Insulin is a crucial compound that our body produces. It helps to transport the sugars we eat to the cells of our body, which in turn use that sugar as fuel. If not enough insulin is produced by the body, sugar can not be used as fuel by the body’s cells, and it instead remains in the bloodstream. This can cause abnormal and dangerously high blood sugar levels. People with Type I diabetes have to have insulin injections often to help their body process sugar. In Type II diabetes, the body produces insulin, but the insulin is unable to be taken into the cells due to a lack of function in the cells receptors. This is a problem that most commonly affects obese people. The reason for this is that fat may cause cells in the body to create an insulin resistance. Since the cells cannot receive insulin, the sugar we ingest remains in the bloodstream, just as in Type I diabetes. To aid Type II, weight loss and oral medications are the most commonly prescribed solutions.

If you think you may be diabetic, there are a couple of warning signs to look for. Do you experience excessive urination? This could be due to the body trying to flush out the excess sugar in the bloodstream. In turn, you may also feel an extreme need for thirst. Commonly, intense hunger is found in those with diabetes. This is due to the fact that the body does not realize why the sugar it ingests is not being processed, so it is simply asking for more food to help remedy the problem.

The main test for checking for diabetes is to monitor the blood sugar levels of a person at various points before and after meals. This can gauge whether or not the body is processing and using insulin as it needs to. There is another test, which is known as the glycosylated hemoglobin test. Also referred to as HbA1c, this test is not commonly used to check for diabetes. Developed in the late 1970s, this test helps to show the average blood sugar levels of a person during the last two to three months. It is commonly used to help gauge general baselines for what a person with diabetes’ blood sugar levels are at, and to see if there is an improvement in the levels of a person over a long period of time.
