Hemorrhoids in Men

Post date: May 1st, 2006

Hemorrhoids cannot only be an embarrassing condition; it also has the potential to become a serious and persistent condition. Unfortunately, if you are male, you have a considerably greater chance of suffering from hemorrhoids. If you are male and suspect you may be vulnerable to the development of hemorrhoids, what can you do to prevent their onset?

To help prevent the onset of hemorrhoids, eating the right kind of diet can make all the difference. You should strive to eat a diet that promotes good digestive health. Highly processed foods, and foods high in sugar, should be avoided as much as possible. Instead, opt for a diet rich in fiber, antioxidants, and the highly touted bioflavonoids. What kind of diet is this? The ideal diet would consist of plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. You should also strive to drink plenty of liquids, and especially water. Think of your body as a vessel: the cleaner you can keep it, the less likely that it will develop hemorrhoids.

One of the most important aspects of an anti-hemorrhoid diet has to do with fiber supplements. The question becomes: to supplement or not to supplement? This depends on your individual health profile. In general, fiber supplementation is a good idea if you would like to prevent or treat mild symptoms of hemorrhoids. Why? Because eating plenty of fiber (along with drinking lots of water) is much like ‘oiling’ your inner body. You should make it as easy as possible for your body to digest the food that you consume. Giant steaks, heavy creams and cheese, starches, and other processed foods are hard on the stomach. They take up a lot of your body’s energies, and typically result in stomach pains or aches, and then uncomfortable bowel movements.

To prevent hemorrhoids, men must be certain to exercise good bathroom behavior. This means that they should strive for the easiest bowel movements possible. This means that your stool should ideally slide through your anal canal with ease. If every bowel movement seems to you an arduous task, requiring great effort and concentrated straining, chances are that something is not right. The more you strain, the more pressure you are placing on your bowels and your anal vessels. This in turn aggravates the vessels, often times resulting in the development of hemorrhoids. Other bathroom behavior tips: avoid sitting for extended periods of time, regardless of the difficulty of the bowel movement. Also, be certain to use the gentlest toilet paper available. This small consideration can make all the difference.

Another important aspect in preventing hemorrhoids in men is related to the amount of physical activity exerted by an individual. Men who stay active and fit are much less likely to develop hemorrhoids. Being overweight or obese is one of the main risk factors in the development of hemorrhoids, since the extra weight is believed to place pressure on the body’s blood vessels and veins. Staying fit is one of the greatest preventative measures that any man can take in order to avoid the dreaded onset of hemorrhoids.
